Cleveland/South of area Riders

I tried searching but couldn't come up with anything good that I wanted to see. So if there is something out there covering this area, please link it up to this thread for me as I couldn't find anything.

Mainly Northern Ohio, South of Cleveland area.

Where are some good places to ride?

There are a few places I'll hit in Brecksville Reservation area, Helltown by Boston Mills (roads are sh!t) and Hinkley Medina area between say the North Royalton Border and Rte. 18 in Medina and from 42 to 77.

The group I ride with mainly hit 71 and take that North to Cleveland and ride around the city but you can only do that so many times until that gets old too.

But where the hell are some good places to ride. I am starting to get bored with what I have been on and am looking for better area's to ride in the South of Cleveland area, if there are even any, twisty sections, if I wanted to go fast in a straight line I'd hit Norwalk.

Any feedback would be great. Maybe a general location or something so I can check it out on Google Maps and figure out how to get there.

Drew

Welcome to the cornfields. The riding this way is pretty poor if you are looking for twisties. If we don't have a lot of time, my husband and I will do some riding around the Bath/Fairlawn area. I don't know the names of the roads but you'll see them on the map. If you have a little more time, there are fun roads in the Coshocton area and also east of 77 kind of around New Philadelphia.

Most of the good stuff in Ohio is south of I-70.

I mean, I don't want to go through a full tank of gas to get some where that only has 5 miles of good riding. You know what I mean? In the general northern area. I'd say within an hour of Cleveland, and depending on how good it actually is, maybe a little farther?

Thankyou! Appreciate it. I am off work tomorrow and am trying to find something new to ride. I'll google map those areas and check it out.

Some fun roads begin around Millersburg. Takes us a about 1.5 hours to get there give or take (on 83). We can usually spend a couple hours in that area and try to do a loop to get us going back north. If we go that way, we usually need about 5 hours for a total trip.

cvnp is fun, and I think one of the ravenna guys was telling me if you get down to RT 9, its supposed to be awesome...

I will have to check both places out on Google Maps to see how far they are from me, thankyou as well!

Sounds good, maybe I can get a group of my friends to head out there with me.

The lack of decent roads in close proximity to the Cleveland suburbs is part of the reason a fair number of us to do track days and/or races at Nelson Ledges.

Show up some time and do the lunch time parade lap.

You may have to pay a gate fee, so have some cash on you, but the lunch time ride is otherwise free, and the only gear requirement is a helmet (maybe long pants as well). Just realize that whether they say so or not, the parade lap leaders will absolutely go a lot slower based on less sport-oriented bikes OR lack of gear. I wouldn't say that they intentionally up the pace for sport bikes or those with full gear, but they also won't be as hesitant to go 60% pace instead of holding back to 40%...

If you like Nelson, it's a nice little speed fix every couple months. Yes, it's $150 for a full day or $75 for Friday night practice, and yes, it's the same 13 turns every lap, but if you're getting bored of it or think you have it mastered after one day, you're doing something wrong!

But Nelson is the twistiest, fastest, and (relatively speaking) safest stretch of "road" in NEO for motorcycles.

Check out google maps & switch on the terrain feature. Hilly areas have twisty roads. Flat areas not so much. That's why most group rides originating in NEO are 300+ miles. One local road with a few curves is West River Road, running north from Valley City.

I have been checking Nelson's out, I was just there at the lake swimming last week and doing the cliff jump. I've been on the motoseries.com site checking it out and learning more on Nelson's track to go sometime hopefully in August.

Great idea, I will check that out. I will have to keep my eye out for those rides and come on this forum more often.

hate to say the truth but there is nothing north,

Come down and ride more towards the south, at least below canton area where there are decent roads to ride. Every weekend we try to ride, At least some NEO group rides happen and its all an average 300+ mile for any fun at all. If you can spend close to 1 hour slabbing then u get hours of enjoyment in some of the nicest roads ohio has to offer.

I was kind of figuring that. Where are some of these nicest roads Ohio has? Road name? City? by chance.

what kinda riding we talking about here? I have plenty of roads that are fun for what they are in the area but the problem lies in the shitty condition of the pavement

Just going out for a cruise type, maybe more of a quicker paced ride. What roads are you talking about? Your city is literally starts halfway through my yard.

A cruise or a little over the speed limit rides are fine but anything more than that and you either have to worry about cops and park rangers or sketchy ass pavement

I suck at remembering road names, I just kind of know where so its a tad hard but some of these maps include some better options but you have to pick and choose, you'll rarely get miles and miles of anything good...more like short bursts ok okayness

Honestly, the best thing I started doing when hitting the Valley was just turning at every road I've never been on and get lost and eventually find my way out

I also have some decent routes for around the Canton area and just south of Canton

OH-44 from East Canton through Atwood and either back up or over to Carrolton on OH-39 is a nice ride that I do after work some evenings. From further North, it's probably a ~3 hour loop, but a nice ride.

As others have said, the truly good roads don't start until you get South of I-70. Down around Woodsfield/Marietta, just about any numbered State road is great fun, but it's a bit of a haul to get there. As you get across the river and into West Virginia, the roads go from good to amazing. We really need to get an OR overnight trip down that way...

OH-646 is one of the better roads that isn't that far South, but it's probably still a 250+ mile loop to get down there from where you are.

As Bad mentioned, the Valley has a couple of gems, but there are too many deer/cops/bicyclists/etc to want to do any riding even approaching spirited.

I do the canal rd route all the time, I work right off of Pleasant Valley and 21 so really familiar with this area. I usually take Canal to Brecksville reservation side road (when you come off 82, make a right at the first street when you go into the park) and take that out to 21 then down to CVNP and through "Hell Town" or Bostom Mills Rd and out to 303 and turn around and do it backwards.

The other 3 routes you posted look actually pretty damn good I'd say. I will have to check that out, I appreciate you taking the time to map them out like that!

I am aware of the police and rangers you talking about, I usually ride within 10mph of the speed limit give or take when I am just out crusing enjoying the ride.

Honestly, the best thing I started doing when hitting the Valley was just turning at every road I've never been on and get lost and eventually find my way out

I also have some decent routes for around the Canton area and just south of Canton

I try to do that once in a while too when I know I got a while to ride. I started out in west Strongsville one time and 2 hours later and a 100 miles ended up in southern Richfield. That was a good time, but lot's of straights not many twisty roads at all.

Or took 82 all the way out west and ended up in Elyria and took some road that led along the lake back to Cleveland and jumped on 2 (I think) over by Avon Lake which was a nice ride minus some little highschool kids throwing a cup of pop out of their window at my buddy and I

As Bad mentioned, the Valley has a couple of gems, but there are too many deer/cops/bicyclists/etc to want to do any riding even approaching spirited.

yeah I am quite familiar with the Marietta area because I used to hunt down in those areas a few years back, but if I remember correctly thats about a 2-2.5 hour haul from me

I actually have those maps bookmarked from when I was a new rider and trying to figure out where I wanted to go. I've saved them for instances such as these, just easier to show a map then type it all out

I think my week night busy spell will be slowing soon so usually I can get out about 5:30 and ride til dark so if you ever need some suggestions on stuff you may not have found let me know. I've been super lame with putting on miles this year so trying to make up for that

Sounds good, will do man! Thanks again! I am going to try and figure out how to get those routes programmed into my phone or gps and then go from there to mount it to my bike maybe just by like velcro or a GoPro mount and try to hit them sometime. Maybe if our schedules work sooner or later we'll hit the routes sometime.

I used to hate riding around the greater Cleveland area on my sport bikes. You can find decent roads, but too many things impacted my enjoyment, 1. Cops 2. Road Hazards 3. People (cars/bicycles/pedestrians) 4. Too much speed required to have fun.

Now, that I have my motard, it's all changed. I regularly ride anything around the Cuyahoga park and have a blast. There are plenty of fun roads around Pennisula and having the Winking Lizard as your "base camp" is nice as well. On those roads, I've even had fun on my old RC51, but if I was caught, it was going to jail instantly type of fun.

If I ride around greater Cleveland on the FZ1, it's just a cruise to get somewhere, not to have soem twisty fun. If I want that, I head down 83 to Millersburg and hit a loop that is a blast. Takes about 4 hours from door to door, stopping for gas/water once.

I'll ride to Canton, get off on 800 South and then take the backway to Atwood Lake. I forget the route numbers, but you take a left at the light in East Sparta. Continue on to 542 and stop for lunch in Delroy at the diner (which has GREAT food, especially the fish and chips). Play around Atwood lake for a bit then head back 39 north through Carollton and find my way home.

Otherwise, it's a day long affair to south eastern Ohio.

Chargin River Road through Hunting Valley is about a "nicest" of any road here in north east ohio. A few gradual sweeping turns, but a lot of slight hills and blind corners. You can't really hammer on it on this road due to traffic and police.

You will pass a real polo field and some mini-mansions.

End up at Squires Castle.

On the return ride back on River Road, turn left on any of those streets. Follow signs to route 87 to downtown Chagrin Falls. Neat little town with a water fall right in the middle of town.

The good roads start south of Canton.
