Fork interchange

How do you determine if another bikes forks/front assemnly will fit your bike? I have seen gsxr front assemblys on everything from SVs to Sportsters and saw a zx14 front on another Harley, along with other combinations. I was hoping someone on here had some know how.

I have a dilemma, I have a 1998 vulcan 500 with forks bent in halve. I bought what I thought where replacements but when they showed up they were different entirely in literally every aspect. They are apparently from some sub model only made only for a few years. The issue is I cannot find the correct ones anywhere craigslist, ebay, rice paddy, and cycle search is no more. SO I was hoping to find some alternative front end that might be easier to locate. I find people that know about swaps but no one who actually knows how to do it. I know it is a very general question, but hoping for any help I can get (aside from cutting the neck and welding in another)

here is some info that may help you.

the last 2 numbers are the fork diameter in MM. so if it says CL0048, thats a 48mm fork. you could find what fits your yoke. sorry its not more recent. seems like 05/06 are the newest listed.

another option is to find a whole front end from another bike, and have a spacer machined so that its yoke fits your steering neck. you will need to do some maths to make sure that the geometry remains the same, or that the change in rake/trail is acceptable to you.

Thanks John. Hopefully something here works. Grapes, it's funny you mention them. I used to work for them. Unfortunately, after changing to Independence they no longer operate as a salvage yard. The only inventory they have is left overs and I have already checked with them.

Also John, this appears to be all sportbikes. Do you have/ know where I can get a list of cruisers? Idc either way, just am looking for a cheap set that fits from any variety of bike.

I reverse searched the part number for the upper and lower steering bearings on Ron Ayers. The length of the steering stem might be different, but the bearings are an identical match on these type bikes. As far as I can tell it will be all the years they were made. Confirm the actual year first.

Kawasaki Vulcan 500

Kawasaki 454LTD

Kawasaki Vulcan 88

Kawasaki Vulcan 88 SE

Kawasaki Police 1000

These aren't necessarily straight swaps. I don't know. The steering stem might be too long or too short or other problems with fit of parts, brakes lines, steering stop on frame, etc.

The actual identical front fork inner tube is only on the Vulcan 500 from 1990 to 2009.

p/n 44013-1422

about $160-$180 each.

Lots of shops on line list them.

Hopefully some good info so you can get this effing thing together so it's not in pieces in our garage!!!
