Gun Informational Reference Thread - For New and Veteran Gun Owners

Nice thread' date=' Chevy. The only thing I would like to add, if it hasn't been addressed already, is that carrying a gun for protection is a very serious responsibility. It doesn't end with keeping your finger off the trigger, making sure your weapon is clean/functional, using a quality holster, etc. If you are going to carry a gun for defense, load it with premium defense rounds. Round nose bullets are not for personal defense. Carrying a weapon for defense that is loaded with target ammunition is irresponsible.

I won't get into why you should carry a round chambered, because that's definitely a personal choice that won't affect anyone but yourself if the need for drawing/shooting presents itself. I will say that in a DFE it's probably a lot safer to draw and click the safety than it is to draw and rack a slide. This all depends on how you exercise and train with your weapon.

Very good point IP. I think I have some literature expanding on this subject. I'll see if I can find it later.

Good points Isaac's Papa. +1 on all of them.

Carrying a firearm is a very serious responsibility.

That brings me to the important issue of "duty to retreat". I think it means if you have a firearm and can get to safety and not escalate a situation, then you should.

For instance if soemone is threating you and you leave and get your firearm, then they try to hurt you so in "self defense " you shoot them, then you could be held liable. INAL (I'm Not A Lawyer) but I think..that's the gist of it.

Okay. I have notice some people being confused on firearm storage in a vehicle while in possession of a CHL.

Question, if you have conceal carry licence, and you are on a motorcycle, how is that treated? can you keep your firearm hidden/concealed in a holster, just like you would in a car?

A motorcycle is just like a car. So if the weapon is 'loaded' then it is a concealed carry and all the same rules apply to the bike as the car.

"the plain sight provision has been removed from the law"
This refers to the original concealed carry law for in/on a vehicle, used to have to keep them in plain sight if they were in a holster on your person.

My tip for the thread:

Remember a loaded mag in/on the vehicle instantly means the gun is loaded and you are carrying concealed. Put your gun in a safe in the trunk and put a loaded mag in a safe in the backseat and per the law you are still carrying concealed. So if you have a drink you can't pop the mag out and be legal...you have to empty the mag also and then you are not carrying...you are transporting a weapon and it has to be stored properly per those rules.

I like the way you put that, referring to if you have a drink!

On a side note, but sort of related, I can see myself buying another lockbox, or a small safe for the house, and keeping my nanovault in the car, once I get my permit.

Here are some pistol drills. These will help with your form, accuracy and speed.

Remember safety first. Read the entire drill before practicing. Some of these are dry fire drills so be positive you firearm is unloaded and still point it in a safe direction. Train at your own risk.

The Cardinal Rules of Firearms Safety

All guns are always loaded. Even if they are not, treat them as if they are.

Never let the muzzle point at anything you are not willing to destroy.

Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target and you have made the decision to fire.

Identify your target and what is behind it. Never shoot at anything you have not positively identified.

This is a good one to start with.

Are your shots not going where you are aiming? Before you start adjusting your sights, maybe it you as the shooter and not the firearm itself. This is for right handed shooters. If you are a leftie, just flip it over.

I don't know which one is the safest, but according to this picture, the green one in the upper left is the most dangerous one to have on you.

EDIT: One of Osama's pals with his carry firearm..picture removed

Having a good stance is one key to good shooting. These are three commonly used pistol using stances. I personally use the weaver stance. This is the most comfortable for me to shoot from. In a combat or tactical situation by "blading" your body, or turning slightly to the side, this gives you a lower profile. The drawback is that body armor tends to not protect the side of your body and can allow a single bullet to strike more major organs. If you are only target shooting then it isn't a big deal.

With the weaver and modified weaver stances, your gun hand presses out against your non-gun hand while your non-gun hand pulls in against your gun hand. Push-pull.

With the isosceles stance, each hand presses toward the center against each other. For most people this is the easiest and most comfortable to accomplish because pressure is split evenly between each side of your body.
