CAMP WASHINGTON - Two police officers who were shot on Saturday by members of the Iron Horsemen motorcycle club have been released from the hospital, Cincinnati police said.

One man was killed and three wounded - including the officers - when a shootout erupted at about 7 p.m. at JD's Honky Tonk and Emporium, in the 2400 block of Spring Grove Avenue. One officer was shot in the leg; the other in the hip.

The dead man, whose name is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification, was a member the Iron Horsemen, as was the wounded man. The Iron Horsemen is classified by law enforcement as an outlaw motorcycle gang.

The shooting remains under investigation, but police released no further details on Sunday. Police are typically placed on administrative leave for seven days following a shooting.

The bar owner is Karen Blackburn-Ivey of Fort Thomas, according to Hamilton County property records. She could not be reached.

According to newspaper reports and the U.S. Department of Justice, members of the Iron Horsemen motorcycle club have been imprisoned in several drug-related cases in the last several years.

In December last year, Richard Szpyt, the president of the club's Maine chapter, was sentenced to life in prison for conspiring to traffic cocaine. Two Iron Horsemen bikers were sentenced in June 2008 in Louisville to five years imprisonment for dealing methamphetamine.

A year earlier, David Lee Richerson, the club's national president, was sentenced in Louisville to 21 months in jail in another methamphetamine-related case.

Locally, in 1989, police said a bloody shootout at Vic's Brew & Cue in Mount Carmel that left two motorcycle-gang members dead involved the Iron Horsemen of Cincinnati and the Outlaws of Dayton.

Saturday night, several members of the motorcycle club were sitting in a courtyard-like area outside the tavern, a trailer-sized establishment tucked among industrial buildings in Camp Washington near Kao Brands.

Investigators with the department's vice unit arrived at the tavern and were fired at as they left their car, said Cincinnati Police Chief Tom Streicher on Saturday night.

Police didn't know what caused the shooting, he said. The officers, some of whom were in uniform, others in plainclothes, were conducting an active investigation, he said.

Cocaine is a hell of a drug...

It almost sounds like someone's cover was blown, judging by the presence of uniformed and plain clothes police officers combined with the line "active investigation."

If 2 armed guys jump out of an unmarked car in ski masks and start heading towards me I'm also gonna shoot first and ask questions later.

:dunno: Call me crazy, but what did the cops expect?

How did you get armed guys jumping out of a car in ski masks?????

One of the investigating cops and the Iron Horseman attorney were on WLW today talking about it. The two cops got there before their marked backup and were wearing masks to hide their identity since they are undercover. They jumped out of the car and approached the bar and the guy guarding the door started shooting at them. Everyone involved agreed that it was a misunderstanding, since there were supposed to be hitmen on the way from detroit. The door guy thought they were the hitmen. Crazy shit.

Might sound like bullshit, but the Iron Horseman attorney and the cop agreed on the story.
