Dan Wessons and STI's are the pick of the crop, but alot of cheddar. Taurus are good for the price and so are Rock Islands, you can always upgrade them also.

Get frisky and build your own from parts. i recommend Fusion or Dan Wesson frames.

just remember, you get what you pay for.

I am currently scrapping for a 1911 chamber in .38 super or maybe 9mm

I love all the 1911 family, Colts to Kimbers. But I'd give the Paraordnance stuff a look too. For bang for the buck, I'd get a Rock Island or a Springfield. Or maybe even one of the Argentinean or Brazilian pistols made on Colt tooling. There used to be a Chinese 1911 copy around, and it wasn't too bad either. No matter what you buy, it may need a little work to make it more accurate. (Barrel, bushing and spring mostly.) But that's not the point unless you are trying to buy or build a competition race pistol. These are mostly combat replicas, and should be enjoyed as they are.

I've been lusting after a full size 1911 since I was a teenager. I've never bought one yet but I have made up my mind finally to just do it. I went to the local gun store and picked up a few to see how they feel.......... I should NOT have picked up the Kimber because it was freaking awesome and now I want one but they are pretty proud of their products and charge accordingly. Anyway I looked at Colt, Springfield, Taurus and Kimber.

Does anyone have any guidance as to which one is great which is crap, anything to look for or look out for......???

I've been a hunter and shooter for years, I just never got into pistols so I'm kinda clueless

Appreciate any help!

Depends on what you want to use it for in my humble opinion.

The .45 is a great round but frankly it's expensive to practice with and I think the lack of round capacity REALLY hurts in terms of survivability, especially when first instinct upon drawing is to tense up and yank the trigger until the gun is clicking... that's, of course, assuming you're doing this for some sort of self-defense carry.

I have a full-framed Taurus 9mm:

And it is fantastic. Easily controllable, holds 15 rounds + 1 in the hole if I decide to get gangstawidit, accurate, and reliable.

I have a lot of respect for the worksmanship that goes into the 1911, though, and in terms of collectability and ballistics results, there's a reason why the design has survived for nigh-on 100 years now. If you want to get yourself a 1911 the Kimbers and Kahr Arms are really nice.

My last experience was a Taurus 1911 chambered in .38 Super... now that was a lot of fun! Thing would blow fire a full eight inches out the muzzle . Completely ridiculous, but it was great.

Go to a range to make sure it's what you really want. For the price that some of those pistols are going for these days, it's not a small investment - make sure that you're getting exactly the gun you want because that $800 will buy a LOT of nice stuff these days.

15 years ago all the Instructors said Taurus was just not an accurate pistol.

Taurus gets a bad rap but they make some decent metal these days.

I had a beaten-on range grunt and it was fine for accuracy. That's more a matter of the shooter over the weapon.

It did have a tendency to let the magazine fall out of the gun tho lolz

I've had my kimber crimson pro carry for about a year now and I love it. It shoots as well as my target pistols with no trouble and very reliable.

The aluminum frame is nice if you want to keep the weight down and the slim profile is great for carry. If you're going to buy a gun, buy it once and buy it right.

Ok. I called Vances and spent quite some time discussing prices today and when all is said and done, they wanted $200 more for the same gun. I was shocked actually cause many of there other guns are pretty cheap. Anyway, they said they dont have any Raptors in stock and Kimber just notified them that if ordered now it would be after Christmas before they were shipped.

So went ahead and put the Grand Raptor in layaway at my local shop and bought a Kel-tec .380 P-3AT while I was there. I should pick up the grand Raptor this weekend.

So let me get this straight. One guy ditches colt and says their junk and suddenly their not worth looking at? And I'm sure you've had a selection of them right? Not just one and done? My father and I have owned several of them and quite frankly their very nice pieces. My dad now owns a Kimber UCII and let me tell you what that's a nice gun, VERY precision. Probably so close that a grain of sand would jamb it. Wait a sec...

There's a reason Colt, Glock, and XD have great names. They fire. Under almost any imaginable circumstance they fire. In a self defence life or death situation give me the gun that'll fire in a sand storm and isn't accurate past 20 yards and you can keep that jambed up pos that'll put 200 rounds through the same hole @ 1000 yards. Colt makes a fine weapon, fire a variety of them before making your mind up, Kimber is a sweet piece, but not something I would carry daily.

I have a Springfield 1911 GI............love it...

I have one also, accurate & super reliable. So far never failed to feed/eject. Bought it approx. 7 years ago and put alot of rounds thru it at the range. Can't beat the price for a good 1911, not the prettiest you will find but it a great firearm.

I like the kimber stainless also, if you want to spend more that would be a good choice...
