Camera Tank Bag

So I've been debating the best way to carry my camera on long rides. I decided to take my tank bag, get a piece of foam, cut to fit, and cut out spots for my camera with a lens on it, and a place for an extra lens. I bought the foam from JoAnn's. It's 4" thick, and cost me $17.75. Here are the pics:

The foam before being cut to fit:

The foam roughly cut to shape, in the tank bag:

I took a marker and quickly traced the camera and lens:

I used an extremely sharp kitchen knife to cut out the spot for the lens and checked fitting:

And the final product:

I know, I'm not very good at cutting straight lines, and I know you can still see some of the marker. I don't really care how it looks. I was going for functionality. It holds the camera and lens quite snuggly. I'm happy with the results and figured someone else might want to do this. It's cheap and easy.

Cool idea, but seems like a lot of wasted space in there for just those 2 items

Couldn't you cut the overall foam by ~ 1/3 if you condensed some, and save yourself a little extra room in there for other odds & ends?

Maybe turn your long lense vertical, & tuck it up in the space to the left of your camera, leaving you the bottom right quadrant open for extra storage space?

You can NEVER have enough space on a long trip like this

Don't you love how much that stuff is!? I was just in there getting the exact same size and type of foam for my tail/backpack. I bent mine into a U shape and nestled a camera bag in the middle. You've got the right idea to make one that holds an extra lens. Great minds think alike.

I have plenty of room actually. The unused space you see is actually going to be cut to hold my iPhone and a few other odds and ends. Plus the tank bag has three other pockets. I also have saddlebags and a tail bag. I have a lot more room than I actually need.

When I walked in and saw that foam was $56/yd, I about shit myself. Haha.

They have 30-50% off coupons everywhere. I dont get anything there without one. Sign up for their flyers.

Ben if you care/wanted, get a tshirt (or Tshirtmaterial from Joanns) and a little spray adhesive and cover the foam. use a seperate piece for the cut outs and another piece for the top.

Did you leave any foam on the bottom of the bag??? thats were your going to need it most banging off the tank.. just get a back pack camera bag or a sling bag... thats what I started doing

Ben has a BP, the point of this is the be able to, stop, open, click, shut, and go.

If you see something while on the road, you have to, stop, take off BP, open, click, shut, put back on, go. Depending on what it is your shooting, it could be gone by then.

O'well. Someone get a new camera?
Not really. It's like a year old. I'd love to get a 50D but I can't right now.
Should trace out your ccw piece and POW!!!
I thought about it, but decided against. At least for this trip.
