B-Mac Posted April 26, 2019 Report Share Posted April 26, 2019 Shepard trail starts after leaving Harlan at 2.24 stops at shell gap (turns to dirt) south on 2010--522 to Cumberland then down 160s to Black Mountain, Highest point in KY. 23 to pound then 197 to the Breaks state park. then to Pikeville, KY. - 119-49 to Historical Matwan (Hatfield/McCoy) all great roads. I led a group from Cinti to Waynesville a few years ago and we rode the western section from 421 east to 2010, which is supposed to be the "paved" section. From the comments I got from the big bike riders on the trip, you'da thunk it WAS gravel.... It is a nice wander in the woods, but I was a bit disappointed in the section we rode, as there weren't the big vistas I was anticipating. Too much vegetation. This is the video I wanted to post. https://youtu.be/j66aXtHaSVM Next time you are in that area instead of taking 197 between Pound and the Breaks Interstate Park find your way to 611 on the Virginia side of the state line. It runs mostly parallel to 197. There is an observation tower up a dirt/gravel road about five miles off of 611 called the Birch Knob Observation Tower. I've hiked between the tower and Breaks park several times. B-Mac Posted April 29, 2019 Report Share Posted April 29, 2019 Thanks for the info. I have passed (Birch Knob Dr,) Many times on the (KAT) route that passes that tower turn off. I will check it out next time, this spring. When I am ADV'ing without the wife I take 630(South Mountain road off 23br just north of Pound to White Oak Creek road just after you cross Bearpen Creek this will turn into Osbornes gap and make a left on Brush Gap, then left on S of the mountain rd. and go right by your turn off for the tower. then this turns into Blowing Rock road, then Bartlick rd to SR80 and into Elkhorn. Uncle Punk Posted April 29, 2019 Report Share Posted April 29, 2019 Where 611 quits being called South of the Mountain road and becomes Blowing Rock Road at 619 there is a little sign in front of an old garage that says "Blowing Rock Community". Every house you can see from there and the next three past 619 is family to me. Love that area and plan to spend more time there every year instead of the couple times a year I get there.
