Why you should never pour gasoline on a fire

I used to fly skydivers on the weekends up in MI.  Every Saturday night they would do a "fireball".  Imagine a giant pile of wood, a five gallon bucket with a pre-determined amount of 100LL avgas, a stopwatch and a flare.  They dumped the fuel on the pile then waited a calculated amount of time for the fuel to change to a gas state and spread out a bit, then throw the flare on it.  Mushroom cloud.  Was kinda cool the first time I saw it, until they explained that it was a lot of trial and error, sometimes hair and flesh burning error, to get the fuel and time right.
