So a smartphone with no cell/data plan can still use its GPS functionality for lap timer apps then?

Hmmmm

I wouldn't rely on the cell's own GPS unit for accurate lap times. There are lots of stand alone GPS receivers that you can link to your phone via BT or wifi that will get you more accurate times. I know DUAL (I think) had some decent ones.

Nothing will be as easy as my AIM Solo

I'd planned on picking up an XT Ultra timer but I think I'll be picking up a new phone soon and my old phone can more than likely run a lap timer app so I was curious. I'll look into a GPS add-on for my old phone.

I have an XT but transponders are not always out. Mid-O usually has one but there has been times where there wasn't one. Both times at Nelson's this year didn't have one. Half the time it doesn't ping correctly and get multiple laps combined.

I am going to get a gps timer over the winter so i don't have to worry about transponders and multi-lap times. I do have an old S4 laying around i might look into now.

I was studying up on Harry's Laptimer.  They have a forum that will answer a lot of the questions on using a phone, an app, a BT GPS receiver and even a BT OBD II unit.  I really want to overlay my RPMs so that I can work on corner entry and exit, optimizing the power band.
