  2. Had a little episode yesterday afternoon out in the sticks about 25 minutes from home. Shut the bike down for a minute at an intersection so oldschoolsdime92 could pet a donkey that had approached the roadside fence where we'd stopped. It appeared to be friendly but when he walked over to pet it, ended up it was just hungry and tried to eat his glove, so he scratched that idea. Got ready to get going again and my bike refused to restart. Pushed it to the berm. Every time I thumbed the start switch I could hear the starter relay ticking erratically.....no worries, we'll just bump start it. Clutch popped it rolling in first, and it fired right up. Left it idling while I threw my lid back on and it suddenly dies. Dash display was well lit, the fuel pump cycled fine every time I flipped the engine cutout switch with ign keyed on, didn't see/smell any cooking of electrics, had good ignition power. Tried tapping the relay several times to get it to engage while I hit the start switch, but no go. Didn't have tools onboard to pull the battery ( it's fully encased in the side of the frame ) and didn't want to try and bumpstart it again just to avoid any further possible electronic meltdowns, so off oldschool went to fetch his truck/trailer. Got the bike home ( Huge thanks to oldschool for the lift back to the house ) and once the battery was pulled, I saw a floured mess at the battery's negative terminal.....could be the issue. I went ahead and tested the relay anyway, just to rule it out and it was fine. Cleaned all the corrosion from the negative terminal, cleaned all other contacts, dielectric greased all connections, reinstalled the battery, bike fired fine. ZX14's have an ammeter built into to the display, and it was reading 14-14.2v consistently so my volt reg was functioning fine. Problem solved. Folks, do yourself a favor and check your battery and ground connections at least once a year. Keep 'em clean and protected. I hadn't had mine apart since wiring up the Battery Tender harness about 3 years ago, and it could have left me somewhat stranded had oldschool not been with me. Biggest lesson learned.....dont pet a donkey, it could turn out to be a hungry ass.

  4. Winter is right around the corner and unfortunately for most of us in the US this means we'll have to put away our toys for hibernation. But what is actually involved in preparing a motorcycle for winter storage? Some people are okay with parking their bikes for the winter just as they left it after their last ride and while that may work for some of the warmer climates, it's not recommended for those of us in the frozen north. There seems to be a lot of confusion as to what is actually involved in getting a bike ready for winter storage with varying opinions from every rider. In this thread you'll find a general idea of what is required to get your bike through the winter and out on the other side as good as you left it. We're going to highlight some of the best winter prep products here, all of which are available from Riders Discount. So what are some of the key winter storage products available to prep your bike for the cold season? Stands to prevent your tires from flat spotting, anti-freeze for coolant, fuel stabilizer to prevent your gas from breaking down, fogging oil to prevent cylinder corrosion, battery tender to keep your battery fresh, and a bike cover to keep your bike warm. Just kidding, a bike cover will help keep your bike clean and partially dust free throughout winter. One thing not pictured are muffler and intake plugs to keep pests out, although a couple paper towels stuffed in your exhaust and intake should suffice. Street riders likely already have anti-freeze coolant but it never hurts to give your bike a good flush and refill every year. If you have ran any kind of track time this year, there's a good chance you don't have anti-freeze properties in your coolant and getting it changed out is a necessity. Fuel stabilizer is recommended if you plan on storing your bike for longer periods of time. Now, regarding batteries, if you have a lithium ion battery, remove it, bring it inside, and store it in a closet. These shouldn't need a charge, however if you think it may, go ahead and give us a call and we'll get one on the way for you. If you have an OE style acid battery, plug in the Battery Tender and leave it. That's it. You don't need to remove it from the bike if you don't want to. One last thing, a common misconception we've seen is to start your bike periodically through the off-season and get it up to temp. You can look at it from time to time but you really don't need to start it up. Just let it sit and fire it up come spring time. So what do you guys and gals do to get ready for winter? Lithium Ion batteries require different charging methods than the old acid batteries. Inside a Lithium Ion battery are different cells - typically 4, 8, 12, or 16 cells depending your motorcycle's requirements. By balancing these cells, you are ensuring that your voltages are equal between the cells giving you the greatest power from your Alien Motion Battery.   8. Buell 1125CR 1.) Recently had stator rewind and rotor upgrade. Assembled everything back together myself. 2.) Purchase new Shorai battery, lights turned on, bike turned over a couple times, then battery went completely dead. Could not get any voltage readings out of it. 3.) Contacted Shorai for warranty exchange, they sent me a brand new battery, checked with multimeter, readings were good, hooked up to the bike and this is what is happening: Sound at 1 second is bike turning on. Sound at 5 seconds is flipping kill switch to on. Sound at 8 seconds is something near the battery area (there is a box there with start and ignition printed on it, sounds like click is coming from there). Sound at 9 seconds is when I hit yellow ignition button. Sounds like squelch is coming from that same relay box. I put my ear down toward the sprag clutch area and didn't hear anything mechanical. Sounds like it is electrical and not mechanical.
