  5. I went to Akron, working full-time and a kid that just turned 9 last year. It wasn't easy, I didn't do the coop and it took me 6 years. If you decide to persue your PE, I will say that the fundamentals test was like taking a test from evey class all in one 8 hour day.

  9. Just make sure you understand how much work getting the degree will be before you start. A two year technical degree would be fairly easy but an ME or EE BS is going to take some serious work, especially now that you have other responsibilities. Many programs are 5 years now with co-op requirements. It isn't just some fuck-around degree like business or communications. Since you have been out of school for a while, you will also likely have to take remedial courses before you can even start your normal required classes.

  11. So I'm planning to do my first track day at Mid-Ohio sometime in the next month or so. I just recently went and spectated a track day so I kind of have a generalized idea of how it works, but help me understand the full process. I've read the website trying to understand everything to be prepared as I can be (I think this is why I've not done it in the past). As I understand it, I'll pre-pay/register for a novice track day. Show up in the morning, go through tech inspection. I've read through the tech requirements so I understand what is required there. The website says the helmet doesn't have to be SNELL rated, but I've heard otherwise. I have a Shoei GT-Air that has the flip down visor so it doesn't pass SNELL, can I use this helmet?? I have a one-piece BILT suit (I know it's not the best, but I didn't want to spend too much money on a suit until I know I'll need it), A* Gauntlet Gloves, Sidici full race boots. This is acceptable gear correct? Is there a class before hand to talk about things,? How do I get assigned a 'rider coach'? As I understand it, after the 20 minute session, we go back into a classroom for 20 minutes with our rider coach and review to learn from our mistakes and improve. Is everyone together and talking generalized information or is it with your coach and more rider specific improvements?? Are there any limitations they put on the novice group that they don't put on the intermediate group?? How does lunch go? I heard it was provided?? Is it enough food or should I plan to bring my own?? Lastly, if you could back and re-do your first ever track day, what would you do differently so I can prepare myself to not make those same mistakes?? (I plan to bring cooler with drinks & a pop-up tent.) Another random question, a buddy of mine has been interested in getting his son (15) out to do a track day. I read they require you to be at least 18 years of age?? How strict are they on that rule or do you have to contact someone to get it approved??? Just looking for some insight to calm my nervousness of not knowing. I was hoping to have some guys I know there to kind of learn together, but that doesn't look like it'll happen and I don't want to wait any longer before getting out to the track. Also I apologize if these questions seem dumb or silly, I'm just trying to be fully-prepared so I can focus on improving my riding while at the track and not worrying about the technicalities of how the track day is run.

  12. As some of you may remember from last couple years, my twin brother passed away in a motorcycle accident on July 12, 2012. The closest Saturday (weather permitting) to that date, I always try to make it a point to take a ride in his memory. Anyone interested in riding is welcome. I know vintage days at Mid-Ohio is also this weekend and quite a few have agreed to that. I did just get a new bike, so pace will be according to how I feel on it, if I feel uncomfortable, the faster guys can always take the lead and if I feel fast, I will wait for anyone at stop signs/turns. Meet at 83/250 in Wooster at the MinitMart.. Kickstands up at around 8am. Route will be 83-78-377-550-7-800-26-260-78-83 https://goo.gl/maps/Hbckfept65y Anyone who wants to attend but can't ride the full route is welcome to jump in or jump out at any point they want... just let us know when that will be so we can look for you or know you dropped out to head back and nothing bad happened. This ride is a go, weather permitting. Post up if you are interested.

  13. The riders meeting is where you discuss flags and then break out into your group with instructors. Ask the specific time/location from your tech inspector or an instructor running around. The classroom session is basically an informal discussion about the previous session. There is no formal teaching with textbooks or a classroom. My only difficulties and were logistical. You enter in gate 3, sign the waiver at a guard shack on the right. Then continue straight, and turn right into the paddock area, marked by a blue sign on the chainlink fencing. You then turn left into the middle paddock area, which has paint lines on the ground. Depending on volume you can continue straight into the lower paddock/garage area (#10 on map). You check in at a small information booth (#13 on map), then they will give you a class sticker and tell you where tech inspection is (if they don't, ask). Take your class sticker to inspection and put it on your bike. If no one shows you before leaving the novice group meeting, ask how to enter/exit the track from the garage area. Map: https://www.midohio.com/Assets/Images/Pictures/TS-GenTrackMap-09 Take: a cooler with water and snacks the key to your bike!! chair earplugs tire pressure gauge and air tank if you have it. Otherwise I'd air up to stock pressure at home and get some advice from coaches/riders once there and air down to recommended pressures. Everyone is usually really friendly and there to have a good time and help each other out. I went my first time without knowing a single person and within 15 minutes I had three new friends just from people walking by and saying "hello". Plan to get there just before tech opens so you have plenty of time to unload.

  15. When are you thinking of going, Derek? I have a cert to use and keep getting pushed off for work stuff. August 22/23/24 are the next days coming up that I could do, twilights are only for intermediate/advanced riders. Free camping those days too!

  16. Everybody has their own way of wording and approaching things....with a little adrenaline going, it is easy for things to get misconstrued. I'd hope that if anyone is being a legit asshole and spoiling someones day; it gets taken care of so it can't happen again. At the same time, IMHO, anyone and everyone should feel free(and the need) to bring up potential safety concerns. If nothing is ever said, nothing is ever learned, and the issue will repeat until it becomes a real problem.

  19. You will have so much fun doing a track day. It is very addictive. Go with the expectation of learning and riding within your comfort zone while learning. Take all the constructive criticism you can. You will be tired when you get done so drink plenty of fluids during the day. Check with your insurance company about your bike policy. Mine let me be covered as long as it was an instructor lead class and I wasn't racing. Had to take off the mirrors and tape off the lights and reflectors and speedometer. Didn't take mine at Mid-Ohio so check with them and others about specifics. If you are trailering there, you can take all the extras you will need like pop up tent, gas, chair and cooler, etc. I would say your current gear would be good. It's preferred that you use a one piece suit anyway. Your helmet should be 5 years or newer. They might check the manufacture date. Go to the riders meeting and they get you started. Lots of good track guys here that can and will give you good advice. Have Fun!!! You will be fast anyway.

  21. ^ what he said. Also, at Ohio State (not sure about other colleges), only 1 in 3 people initially entering the College of Engineering will graduate in engineering. According to their statement, most of the people will graduate with business degrees. The required upper level calculus and science classes are no joke. My masters degree is in business, and it was significantly easier than my engineering degree. If you are a mature and driven individual, very little in this world is unattainable. You just have to want it enough.

  22. RHill: agree on the cheap track bike...not in my plans. Disagree on the toy comment : I am not broke, but still not going to be a "good day" if my "toy" is burned to the ground.

  23. My evaluation happened when the rain came. Bikes started to go down. I did get the bump, but seeing THE most expensive bike on the track go down soured me going another session. I still had a good time. Ran into Mark, surprised he remembered me from the endurance days. Met some great people whom I introduced them to Ohio Riders. Plus riding arguably the most storied road course on the east coast was an awesome experience.

  24. modular helmet is questionable based what track/group is running the show, not sure for the Mid-O rules. Mid-O has always had great food and I haven't ever attended a day where they run out. Bring a small snack to get you going in the morning....they have had coffee the last couple days I've attended(maybe I just missed it before) Bring plenty of water/Gatorade and literally down at least a bottle between every session. "what would you change?" nada. But I will say, speak up if you have any questions, comments or concerns. Get the coaches input, tell them how you are feeling on track and listen.....especially if they are critiquing(as ego shattering as it can be). The saying "ride your own ride" still applies to the track; don't get rushed picking up the pace just because someone else is moving a bit faster...even if it happens to be your CR. Track time is about learning and expanding your abilities; going fast is a byproduct. Pace yourself, get comfortable, figure out where you want to be on the track(lines/apexes), then slowly pick it up. For a non-experienced trackdayer, taking a mint $16k bike to a trackday is like handing the keys of a $50k+ car to a 16 year old and telling them to go to it.....oh yeah, ignore the speed limits and go as fast as you want too. Your buddies want to "race"???? Sure, go right ahead! There are plenty of CHEAP track bikes out there. If you are worried about insurance or the cost of repairing the bike after an accident, you are focusing in the wrong direction. My bike could burn to the ground in an accident....as long as everyone walks away after, it wasn't a bad day. The bike is a toy. There really should be a bike rental/trackday program sponsored/incentivized by insurance companies.....that is, if they had any actual interest in preventing bike accidents. Sorry to hear about your experience....you end up getting the bump or did it start raining before the evaluation? With novice group, and starting with unknown experience levels, they have to start out very mild and slowly work up .....if not, people would get sucked into turns and be crashing out of novice left and right. I know when I was in N with MotoSeries; after getting past the nerves of the first 2 sessions, I was bored until the leapfrogging 5th session, then for the 6th and 7th we really picked up.

  30. Damn Hyundai held up pretty good for getting smacked with a pickup. People who bitch about how "they don't make em like they used to" probably forget that this same impact would have been fatal in an old lead sled. Glad you're fam is ok. Buy a Subaru.

  39. right around the time the girls turn 1.25~1.5 or possibly even as late as 2, you and the wife will be discussing the dreaded "are we ready for another one?" and that's because having and raising kids is amazing. i was one of those guys who always knew he would be a dad and wanted to raise a kid, so take this with a grain of salt, but kids are awesome. in my line of work, shit goes up and down like crazy (along with the stress), and my one constant has been my daughter. you can pour your heart and soul and love into your kids... it will be like shining a flashlight at the sun because of all the love you feel from loving them will make your efforts seem laughably feeble in comparison. now, like i wrote on your facebooks, this isn't to discount the utter shitfest your life will be (at least sleeping wise) for the next 3~6 months. that is a "joy" i could have done without, but ultimately, it contributes to the overall experience. there are lots of other things, but you're living it now, so no need to tell you. wish you guys the best.
