AR Shopping

I'm in the market for an AR. I dont know a whole lot about them, beyond the fact that I know I want a 5.56, and I'd prefer a "personal" transfer. I'm left handed, and would like something that is also left handed.
Budget is around $1,500.00
Discuss, or feel free to PM.

Also, we covered this recently here http://www.ohio-ride...ead.php?t=33872 there's some good information in there for sure though, make sure you take a look at building as well.
I didn't know they made an AR variant that had reversed ejection ports (but it doesn't surprise me)

Don't rule out 223 imo

If I get a 5.56, I can shoot .223, but if I get a .223 I can't shoot 5.56 - thats the difference.
I read the other thread, but I really didn't get much out of it. I'm not really looking to build one either. I'm ready to BUY one.
Guess I should have been more specific...

THAT'S what I was forgetting, I thought it was 223 and something else (didn't know it was 556)... I don't see a lot of private ar15s for sale, seems noone wants to sell them once they get em!
Given your price you could easily get a new one from Vance's and I'm betting JJ may be able to hook you up with a deal

Page 3, almost every rifle is under 1500.... I'm jealous

In order to give any advice on that stuff, it helps to know what you want it for. Home defense, service rifle matches, varmint hunting, target shooting/plinking, killing zombies or to just piss off liberals.
All that said, get yourself a basic M4 clone with backup iron sights. It's a good starter AR15 and you can go crazy from there. Stag is the only one I know of that makes a full lefty rifle. I wouldn't bother with it tho. Get the rifle, try it out, add accessories or gadgets as budget allows.
R1crusher kept his pretty simple, but went all out on duracoat.

Found this, it sounds like you're going to need to build to get a left handed ejection unless you go through Stag... find a AR15 then purchase an upper online, uppers don't require FFL transfer.

Good info there, Likwid. Thanks.
The left handed thing isn't a "must have" but it sure would be nice.
I'd rather avoid the whole "building" thing because I'm lazy, and certainly like to avoid the old trip to the gun store if possible.
I'm really hoping there's someone around that might need some Christmas Cash and needs to get rid of one.
Maybe theres a gun show coming up I can get to?

Building isn't necessary. You can save some money, and it allows you to customize every component to get it exactly the way you want.
Hit the gun shows and see what you can find. Failing that, try www.hartsguns.com. He's my local ffl and carries a bunch of stripped lowers, parts kits, and complete rifles.

That's awesome!
What's up with the grip though? Looks folded up or something.
Probably to avoid having a pistol grip. It has a muzzle break vs a flash hider too. I'd guess it was built in a state with a state specific AW ban that was based on "evil features".

Dalton is next week
Akron is in 3 weeks
To be honest, I wouldn't buy from the gun shows... just too many morons, do like Walther suggested...
I've never built one, but given the experience I'd be more than happy to build for you, you purchase the lower and do the transfer (same as if you purchased through a dealer) and have the rest shipped to me...
I was looking at building one last month too, I can find a build list, but it's really, upper, lower, barrel, receiver, & stock if it's not included... couple other parts I can't remember, but I could pull one up.

All I gotta say is, "Don't piss off the Kitty!"

Edit: And the Duracoat works well, blood washes right off.

It wasn't too bad, I liked it. I loved the ruger SR556 but it is a lil top heavy with all the rails and would be more than you're wanting to spend. I think the stag will be closer to your price range and give you some money left over for a decent scope, maybe new grips?

Todd, the AR-15 is the Mr. Potato Head of the gun world. You can get them in nearly any configuration imaginable. Different barrel lengths, barrel profiles, grips, accessory rails, optics, slings, colors, etc....
That's what I've found so far. I guess I'm looking to get as much gun and goodies as I can for the $1,500.00 (more or less) that I have to spend
In order to give any advice on that stuff, it helps to know what you want it for. Home defense, service rifle matches, varmint hunting, target shooting/plinking, killing zombies or to just piss off liberals.
Use? Eh, whatever I may need it for. It may well end up spending most of its time propped up in a corner of the closet. That being said, I'd say reasons #1, #4, and #6.
Again, I dont know that I necessarily need a full lefty rifle, but having ambi safeties and the like would be nice.
As far as buying something basic, and then deciding what I want on it goes, well, I don't really work that way. I'd rather get all I can in the beginning, and then decide if I need anything else later on.
I know there are several avenues, dealers, etc., that I could take this down, but I'd REALLY like to avoid the whole deal of doing it that way. Basically, I prefer to purchase items such as these through a "private" individual - at least while I can.
Thanks for the advice so far. Good information, really.
