bark615 Posted June 26, 2015 Report Share Posted June 26, 2015 I was shooting some backyard clay targets back in the early 90's and have been wanting to get back out there and try some proper skeet, trap or sporting clays! What is the popular message board for skeet, trap or clays? I am thinking an over/under would probably be a good all around shotgun to do all three. I know trap is going away from you and skeet is coming from the side and ideally you would have trap gun and skeet gun... but those kinds of funds are not in the budget. I may have access to a fairly good priced Winchester 101 through a family member. I did most of my clay shooting back in the day with a 101 a remembered enjoying it. I am in the Cleveland area and found the following options. AA near nelson is about 45 mins away Ashland gun club is 55 mins away Sportsman shooting center in Canton - 50 mins Blair Rabbit is 2h 15min There is some huge place off of 71 (around that 35/36 area) I see on my drive to Circleville. Although not as familiar with NEO, I've shot at the Hill and Dale in Medina (may be private club though...always went with a member), Cardinal shooting Center right off of 71 just south of Mansfield, Airport Lancaster, and I have a membership at Blackwing in Deleware. All these places are automated, so you don't have to bother any staff to pull for you AND you can shoot alone (I generally don't want new friends). As for guns, you want a gun with choke tubes if shooting both trap and skeet. I have dedicated guns, but for recreational purposes, you don't need them. You want a double or auto for skeet. Pump can and has been done well, but I'd recommend against for skeet (pump is fine for trap). I have a beautiful Maple stocked Citori which is ok for trap and skeet, but I much rather use one of my Betetta autos. Also, you think skeet is fun? Try sporting clays!!!!!!! Your thinking about Cardinal Shooting center on 71 at rt 61. They do trap, sporting clays and 5-stand. I've shot sporting clays there one time, it's not a bad place and the prices are average. You also have Blackwing shooting up in Delaware. Not sure what's up in your part of the state. I started shooting sporting clays with an old Ithaca SxS 12 gauge. I can tell you that's not a great plan. It can be done but is very hard. A modern Semi-auto that is designed to feed low recoil shells can serve you very well for multiple years in all types of clays games. I ran a Browning Gold series sporting clays semi-auto for over 10 years and did very well with it for trap, skeet and sporting clays. Just make sure it's designed to feed low recoil shells. Most hunting guns won't cycle sporting clays loads. Only this year did I finally upgrade to an over-under. Broke down a spent my tax return on a Browning Citori 725, I'm still learning the gun but I like it so far. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

owndjoo Posted June 29, 2015 Report Share Posted June 29, 2015 (edited) My dad is a pretty serious ATA Trap shooter. Just got back from the Ohio State Shoot at Cardinal this last week. Cardinal is a Phenomenal place to shoot both practice and competition. And by far the CHEAPEST. Practice is $5 per 25!! Pretty sure Blackwing is in the $8 area. Cardinal also has the sporting clays and 3d archery and are currently building at Pistol range as well. They also have a real nice campground there with an indoor pool and laundry. My pops has a beautiful Caesar Guerini combo with o/u and unsingle setups with a stock lock system. (Not Cheap) I personally am just getting started and picked up a great Browing BT-99 Plus w/release trigger, last week. (1/10 the price) If you are looking to shoot multiple disciplines, then I would definitely go with the o/u setup for all around, or you can always run an auto if you wanted. Helmutt Posted June 29, 2015 Report Share Posted June 29, 2015 I shot trap and skeet back in the later 80s with an old Ithaca Mod37 20ga pump, basically because sometimes I needed more than 2 shots, and it was my all purpose hunting/clay gun/only gun. Made do with it and had a blast, but that gun is long gone since my teens. We have trap boxes at our local F&G, but I've not been to any of their shoots yet.
