Carrying spare fuel? Do you? How?

Do any of you offroaders or touring guys carry extra fuel with you?  How do you carry it?  What contraptions have you made for carrying some extra gas?  Tell me all about it.  I'm thinking it's a good idea.

I've been tempted to get a camping fuel bottle for on road emergency fuel. They seem relatively expensive for just a little bottle though.

I have not used them but I have seen several bikes setup with Rotopax mounts.

I was thinking more like a PVC pipe with a couple of fuel bottles

stuck in it, and with a cap.  Mounting and all is part of what I

was wondering about.  Those off road guys are pretty creative.

I'll have to see what they have that they may have adapted for

the road on their touring bikes.

Off-road and touring are quite different obviously, one is typically "off-road and the beaten path" and another is typically on-road. Gotta say I agree with the question asked "have you ever ran out of gas"? Roto-Pax is the best system there is, short of just going with a bigger tank. Usually not hard to find gas for a fill up unless you are just extremely remote, and I am betting you will be more than ready to get off your current bike for a bit when it is time for a fill up. My V-Strom is extremely comfy and I have a 200 plus mile range, but I am still more than ready to get off the bike for a bit after a re-fuel. I would worry more about staying hydrated, over expanding my fuel capacity. Get a GPS if you don't already, that "find fuel" feature can be a life saver.

Whenever I ride with the other apex guys and their supermoto's that only have a 60 mile range... I'll throw a Mountain Dew bottle or Gatorade bottle full of gas in a book bag for 'just in case'.

On the recent Deals Gap trip I carried an extra half gallon in (2) rectangular steel quart cans strapped to my luggage rack. This is also super-safe. Once I found out that everyone's range was adequate I got rid of the cans just because I hate being a fireball.

I ran out of gas once. Got on the bike at work, and said 'Self, get gas before you get on the turnpike....You ain't gonna make it.' Promptly forgot. Low fuel light came on as soon as I hit the on ramp. Decided to go for the service plaza. About two miles before the plaza it coughed on a lane change. By the time I got to the plaza exit it was dead. Pulled in the clutch and coasted right up to the pump.

I ran out  a bunch while my last job scrambled my brain and I had a fuel tap with no warning light. I prefer to run out of gas on reserve than to have the tap on off and empty the fuel bowl after pulling out of the lot into speeding traffic.

I ran out in NM on a trip with the wife. We got a little lost looking for a ghost town on a round trip that was already close to my maximum range so I ran out about 10 miles shy of a gas stop on the way back. I carried a 32oz. MSR bottle with gas under both panniers at the time, so I dumped both into the tank and got to a gas station no problem.

 

The MSR bottles work good, and fit into the Agri-Supply tool tubes.

 

Around Ohio you have to be forgetful or have a broken gauge to run out....gas stops are just too plentiful around these parts so I don't carry fuel here.

MSR bottle with gas under both panniers at the time, so I dumped both into the tank and got to a gas station no problem.

Yup.....but the rotopax and MSR bottles only look bad ass mounted on V-Stroms and the likes.

Without a low fuel indicator, and varying mpg's pending my right wrist, I may consider a spare fuel cell of some sort for it.

What did you find was the easiest way to refill it? Did you pour it in at fillups 

 

 often to keep it fresh?

I've always seen some one else run out of gas. Carrying spare fuel would be worth it, just so I don't have to drain some out of my tank for them. Quicker too. I do carry a 2.5 mini NATO jerry can in my Jeep. Dump it in the tank once and a while to keep a fresh supply. Probably should use Stabil in it. There is a blue marine Stabil that last longer, but using double regular Stabil is probably the same thing, maybe.

 

edit: Nope, Stabil Marine is for preventing ethanol damage. Not the same thing... but maybe better... does appear to be double strength.
