New honda crf250l???

What has everyone heard?

I've been watching a few here and there but not completely sold on them.

Bro-in-law jumped the gun and bought one. He loves it, but, he has never had a bike other than that.

I've had multiple dual sports and the last was the xr650l which I miss daily.

Someone said the 250 was just as good as the 650, because the 250 is aluminum framed, 6 speed and fuel injected...

That is what I need to know.

I've read the motor is based off the CBR250RR motor. Better for street than dirt. But if you're just doing light trails, dirt/gravel roads, etc I think it'd be awesome. I've been looking at them and the WR250R. The WR seems to be better off-road than the 250L.

No 250 will be "as good" as a 650, except that they're lighter, easier to throw around, transport and pay for.  Depends on what you want to do with it really - a 650 will get you there more comfortable, but a 250 will be easier once you're there.

 

I have a 2009 CRF230L and it lacks the oomph of the fuel-injected CRF250L.  I'd gladly trade up to the slightly bigger Honda or Yamaha if I could.

I've been opting for another 650L, miss mine dearly. Someone offered a trade for my superhawk... I thought no way. Then found out it was a 2013 model with less than 500 miles on it.

But it's still a 250

Main use will be back and forth to work.

The superhawk is fine for that, but I do miss my dual sport

The CRF250L is much cheaper than the WR250R, which is the bike most similar.

The CRF is also shorter and ergonomically smaller. Good if you are short, but feels cramped to me.

General consensus is that the CRF is similar to the WR in power but far behind in suspension and off-road handling. 

I wouldn't mind one, especially for roads, gravel and light trail work, but would prefer the WR for larger feel and off road capability.

I would think the XR650L would be a very different machine. Considerably heavier, taller and much more low end grunt. That is definitely a much bigger bike than the CRF in every measure.

How much highway do you traverse to work?  If it's a modest amount, then a 250 would be fine, plus it gets much better MPG and gives you the option for lightweight hooligan/dirt play.

Heres what I can tell you.  I picked up a wr250x a few weeks ago. I've logged a couple hundred miles on it since I picked it up. First off, I love it. I love the weight and nimbleness.I love the fuel injection. I love that it makes power higher in the RPMs. It loves to be revved. I've not ridden a 250R but I'd assume its similar.  If you want stump pulling power, you may want to go with something bigger. The power reminds me of a 2 stroke almost in a sense. My WR isn't 100% stock. It has a full FMF system ( power bomb header and power core muffler) FMF programmer, AIS removed, and the air box flapper is removed. It will cruise comfortably on the highway at 70-75 no problem. Just make sure you plan your passes accordingly. I'm also running stock gearing. I feel it could be dropped down a tooth up front. I've had the X off road a tiny bit, and this is where I feel it could be brought down a tooth. It doesn't lug around in 1st and 2nd gear very well. I believe my biggest complaint is the tiny fuel tank. Every time I leave the house, I have to head straight to the gas station.
