Pelotonia 2014 Moto-Escort

Lots of OR members have helped out with this in the past, and we are looking for help again this year. I many members are riding their bicycles in the ride, which is awesome.

We are looking for a few people to help out with escort duties.

Basically, what you do is ride along the route and help out anyone who needs assistance. The vast majority of stuff is chains coming off, flat tires, etc. Easy stuff. The route is very similar to last year's although there may be some minor changes. We start downtown (and have some people start in Pickerington too) and the end of the ride on Saturday is at Kenyon College in Gambier, OH (just outside of Mt. Vernon). On Sunday, the ride goes from Kenyon to New Albany.

The dates for the event are Saturday August 9, and Sunday August 10. Most of the help will be needed on Saturday, but there is a need for a few people on Sunday too. We start downtown (and have some people start in Pickerington too) on Saturday morning. I think first riders go out around 7:30 AM and the end of the ride on Saturday is at Kenyon College in Gambier, OH (just outside of Mt. Vernon).

Saturday night there is a huge party with food and beer!

On Sunday, the ride goes from Kenyon and ends in New Albany.

In the past, we have made arrangements for dorm rooms in Kenyon if you want to do both days, and we should be able to do that again this year too. We can have someone take your gear up too (pillow, sleeping bag/sheets, toiletries etc) so you don't have to worry about carrying it with you all day.

If you can only help out one day, or only a partial day, that's no problem at all. We can find something for you for sure.

I know there were some other posts about escort duties in another thread, so I wanted to make this to put it out there, and consolidate the info.

If you can't escort, there are other non-riding volunteer opportunities too. We can definitely find something for you if you can't ride.

What is required:

1. Have your endorsement, and have your bike registered, plated and insured.

2. Wear at minimum helmet, jacket, gloves. At least a 3/4 helmet. No novelty german war helmets. This is requested by Pelotonia. Escorting is all about safety.

3. No super loud bikes at low speeds. No straight pipes etc. We don't want you scaring riders, or making them deaf.

4. No turkeys.

We have a limited number of yellow vests that you can wear so you can be identified as an escort. I am working on trying to get more. I am also working on getting tubes, tire levers, pumps and maybe some basic tools and stuff.

If you don't know how to change a bicycle tire, I can teach you. It's super easy. I've gotten quite good at it after doing this for a few years. :)

Post up here or PM me if you want to participate, or if you have any questions at all, and I can get you registered.

You can also email me at pelotoniamoto@gmail.com any time!

Check your email, I sent out an email earlier today with a link to register. If you need it again, let me know :)

hmm... not sure which would be a bigger risk to break down during this event:  me on a bicycle, or my bike at sub-20mph speeds for 100 miles.

In the beginning you will ride sub 20 mph.  After the 25 mile mile finish, you will ride a little faster.

John and I were at the tail end last year, and rode around the speed limit after the bob evans stop. To the point where we almost blew a turn before Granville.

yeah the first 20 miles are the slowest, and the most stopping. after that its pretty chill. still some slow and go spots and still some stopping, but honestly the first 20 miles or so are the busiest and slowest.

we had a pretty good run after the bob evans stop actually... we did what? 10 or 15 miles without seeing anyone before we caught up to the end of the pack again.

In for both days.

If anyone from out of town wants to work on Saturday; I get a room at a Marriott off of 270 and Tuttle Road each year - I can get a two bedded room if anyone needs a place to crash Friday night.

Edit:

I got two rooms at the

Marriott North

5605 Blazer Parkway

Dublin, OH 43017

$50 each

Can always cancel one room if no one needs it.

Decent hotel, secure parking, good bar (important to me), quiet, Marriott beds, etc.

Bump

For all you single fellas out there, lots and lots of round shapely things stuffed into or popping out of spadex to look at all day. :D

  that's the motivation??

because there are men there with the same sort of things happening :p

It really is a bit of fun.  Its a little hard on your wrist, but still a good time.

http://www.dispatch.com/content/blogs/best-bike-blog/2014/06/pelotonia-announces-changes-for-the-start-of-the-ride.html

new starting points this year. 25/50 mile riders will start from the arena district at 8 am. 100 and 180 mile riders will start from the commons at 7 am. 75 milers will still start from pickerington as they have in the past.

if you're interested, definitely let me know. even if you can only do one day or partial day, we can find something for you :)

I'm not sure if I'm riding this year or not. I haven't had much time free to ride and haven't even signed up yet. If I don't, I'm most likely in for moto-escort.

Can you moto-escort from a trailer?

Are we gonna have a pre-ride meeting, to get shirts and stickers, etc for bikes?

Yes was planning on it. Probably at Champs again, but I am open to suggestions.

Sounds good to me-  at least I know where it is.

Holla when you pick a time and date and I'll try to be there.
